A long time ago fishermen used to make rigs and they always used to return home with plenty of walleyes. If you have been using walleye rigs then here I will teach you how to make walleye rigs on your own. Besides if you are a newbie then you would get a lot from this article.
In walleye fishing history there was fishing equipment that changed everything. That’s Lindy’s rigs. Lindy rigs consist of a long leader that was made with a monofilament fishing line. This line further contains floats, beads, and certain blades that lead down to the hooks.
If you visit the market you will know that there is a huge variety of rigs. You will be shocked to see the big isles of different kinds of rigs in the big box tackle stores.
These rigs can be used to catch any kind of fish with any kind of live bait. You have various options of live bait to use with rigs. You can use creek chubs, leeches, minnows, shiners, or even worms.
If there is no restriction on using these types of live bait with your walleye rig in your area then go ahead.
There are both varieties in the market high quality and inexpensive ones. You can choose either but don’t rely on cheap ones as they tend to break easily.
So here is the thing, if you don’t want to spend money on buying either cheap or expensive walleye rigs then you can make your own rigs by using simple techniques.
Remember one thing: if you want to make your own walleye rig at home then you must have some essential components e.g hooks, blades, beads, etc. if you buy the whole stuff separately and make your own walleye rig then you might end up the same money.
My all-time favorite walleye rigs setups

Slow Death Rig For Walleyes
After Lindy rigs, the slow death rig is also getting popular because of its innovation. The main reason behind the popularity of Slow Death rigs is their ability to catch a fish.
If you ask me the crux of slow death fishing then it’s using the bottom bouncers. Along with bottom bouncers, you use a leader of the monofilament line. You have two options either you fish plain with slow death rigs or use components.
When we are talking about slow death fishing that actually refers to slow fishing.
I would recommend you stick to 0.5 to 1.0mph speed during slow death fishing. Sometimes you are allowed to speed up as it works occasionally but mostly you should be slow.
You must be wondering why I am suggesting using a monofilament line instead of fluorocarbon. Well, there is an issue with fluorocarbon it floats.
In order to get your line to sink deeper, you would need to add snap weights and other components. But if you make it too heavy it may sink to the bottom and pick up snags.
That’s why make sure you use light components to the floating line so that it doesn’t drag the bottom.
One last tip, don’t use the leader longer than 3 feet.
Walleye Spinner Rig
Aside from being a fan of slow death walleye fishing, I would also include other rig presentations. The slow death rig stands out when you are trolling at slower speeds.
But the time when you need to increase speed to get more fish then you will need to have spinner rigs.
You get confused when it comes to choosing the blade for your spinner rig. You come across plenty of blade options, for example, Indiana, Colorado, Willow, Hammer blades, etc.
Well, I would recommend you try different blade colors and sizes to check what works for you. Because we don’t have any idea in which situation which blade color or size would work.
The components of walleye spinner rigs include a monofilament leader, blade, beads, and a hook. You can use 2 to 3 hooks as per your choice.
I am suggesting more than one hook because you have plenty of options regarding baits. You can use one hook for the crawler and the other for the minnow. That’s my choice you can try various combinations.
When you are using spinner rigs for walleye trolling speed is the key. You should play with various speeds and find the ideal that works for you.
Experimenting is the key because it helps to find out the best speed that works for you. Then replicate the speed and blade combinations.

Walleye Minnow Rig
When you visit the market for walleye minnow rigs you would come across various options.
Some guys use the minnow rig just like the spinner rig with 1 hook. But I would go with minnows rather than using it like a spinner rig. You can keep collecting minnows occasionally.
When you have the option of walleye minnow rigs you don’t need to spend money on bottom bouncers. You can get results without using the bottom bouncers, you can replace them with short leader and egg sinkers.
Also, I found that using a long leader is not suitable with larger minnows. Moreover, these are my opinions do what works for you.
Walleye Worm Rigs
When we are talking about walleye worm rigs that means you get plenty of choices. They are one of the most versatile rigs I have ever seen.
Mostly you make rigs with night crawlers but I would suggest you tie two hooks one for night crawlers and the other for a minnow.
When it comes to making walleye worm rigs you have a huge chance of getting creative.
Experiment with different crawlers, leaders, and blade combinations. You don’t know what would work for you that’s why experimenting is the key.
Shore Fishing With Walleye Rigs
Shore fishing is all about getting your bait on the bottom but you must keep the rigs simple and flat.
I would not recommend you to use bottom bouncers while shore fishing walleye rigs.
Here we would use heavy snap weights to keep the bait on the bottom. The bottom bouncers are recommended for trolling not for shore fishing.
If you want me to suggest the rigs for shore fishing then I would recommend you keep it simple with a plain leader and a hook.
This is what I like to do but you must experiment and check which works for you. Here you should avoid using the blades.
Trolling With Walleye Rigs
When it comes to trolling it’s all about experimenting. Experiment and find what works for you and then replicate the same tricks. You are allowed to experiment with various speeds and equipment when it’s about trolling.
Here you are free to use snap weights, beads, bottom bouncers, etc. just know what works for you.
When your bait achieves a specific depth then you can increase the speeds. The walleyes are trained to chase the bait for longer distances.
Final Thoughts
Walleye fishing is one of the most appealing activities. You just feel like a pro when you catch a big walleye.
Here I have discussed the top walleye rig options I mostly recommend to the newbies. As a professional troller, you would make your own diary with all of your experiments and their relevant results.
After finding an experiment successful you can replicate the trick to get more and more.
